ExceedMDx Genetic Testing offers a reliable, accurate and confidential Maternal Ancestry Test (mtDNA) to test for and determine maternity or maternal lineage. This test can be used in a number of different situations, including:
To test and confirm a mother-child relationship
Ascertain one's personal family history on the maternal line
Solve kinship or sibling relationship (such as half-brother/sister on the mother’s side, maternal uncle/aunt-niece, maternal cousins, etc), particularly when a male reference (such as father) is not available
Use one's mtDNA information to study personal ancestry including ethnic and geographic origins.
Test Description: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) could be found in the mitochondria of every cell of a human body. Mitochondrial DNA is maternally inherited and hence is passed on from a mother to both her daughter(s) and son(s). As a result, every offspring of a particular woman is expected to have an exact copy of his or her mother's mtDNA. Mutations in mtDNA do not happen frequently (once every 25-50 generations). Thus, every individual within the same maternal lineage will possess the same composition of mtDNA. Hence, the use of mtDNA analysis allows a maternal line to be traced back many generations. ExceedMDx Genetic Testing’s Mitochondrial DNA Test is based on sequencing two regions of the mitochondrial DNA (known as Hyper Variable Region 1 and Hyper Variable Region 2) and looking for mutations which are passed between females and their offspring. In addition, these sequencing results can be compared with information found in genetic databases for established groups of people called haplogroups. By comparing your mitochondrial DNA sequence to these known haplogroups, we will be able to determine which haplogroup you belong to, and therefore will be able to provide you with information regarding your geographical history and origins.
If we are provided with 2 DNA samples from two different females, we can determine if these 2 individuals are related. Please note that while a Mitochondrial DNA Test can determine if people share the same maternal line, the test cannot determine the type of relationship (aunt, niece, nephew, grandmother etc) between the people being test.
Required Sample: Saliva is used for this test. The sample is collected by simply spitting into a saliva collection device supplied by ExceedMDx Genetic Testing. Saliva collection using a buccal swab is also available upon request. Following sample collection the DNA in the saliva is preserved in a provided preservative. The tube containing the preserved DNA sample is shipped in the supplied shipping envelope back to ExceedMDx Genetic Testing where the test will be carried out. If you want to use these test results in a Court of Law, please contact us.
Cost: Pricing covers all the required materials for sample collection and shipping as well as the test fees and the reporting of results to our customers, with no hidden extra costs.
Fast Turnaround Time: Upon receipt of samples at our facility turnaround time is 3-5 business days. Rush service also available with a 2 day turnaround for an additional fee. Click here for a sample report for our maternal ancestry test.
How to Order the Test: After identifying the specific test(s) to meet your needs, we will provide you with the required materials for sample collection along with post-collection shipping materials. Please contact ExceedMDx Genetic Testing for more information:ExceedMDx Genetic Testing
